Chapter 15: The Coliseum

----- Lutz -----

After gathering up all our items from the park, the girls and I follow Rin to whichever destination she has in mind next.

“It’ll be dark in a couple hours,” I say. “And I was hoping to have a little discussion with you before we head back to our home.”

“Going to my place,” Rin says.

“Sweet. That’s exactly what I was hoping for.”

The trip is short. As expected, Rin lives in the beastkin slums. Her house is just as run-down as all the others, but that doesn’t seem to bother her as she steps into her small yard.

“Rin, Rin!” A beastkin girl waves from next door.

She returns the gesture, and I even see the hint of a smile on her lips.

Woah now. You better be careful, or you might actually show some emotion.

We step inside the house and pointedly ignore the deteriorating interior as we walk into the small living area. There’s only a single chair and table, along with a bedroll in the corner.

“You really like to live a minimalist lifestyle, don’t you?”

“No need for anything else.”

“I hope you’ll excuse us, then. We’re not too fond of sitting on the floor.” I pull our usual items out of my [Inventory].

The once empty floor now contains a large table and several comfortable chairs. Oh, and a freshly brewed pitcher of tea, of course.

After we make ourselves comfortable, Rin takes a seat in her chair.

“Care to explain why you sought me out?”

“It wasn’t you in particular. I was looking for anyone with a lot of strength who didn’t participate in the recent battle against Chaos. Specifically, someone who’s likely to be involved with the coliseum.”

“For what purpose?”

“I want to join.”

“You, join in the matches? It’s clear you’ve got wealth and power, so why would you subject yourself to such barbarism?”

“Why are you?”

“…”

“Yeah, it’s like that. I’ve got something I need to do, and having someone on the inside explain the workings of the coliseum before I enter would make things much easier.”

Rin turns from us, eyeing her hands which rest atop her small table. She merely sits in silence for a while, so the girls and I take the opportunity to enjoy our glasses of tea.

Finally, she speaks up. “I’ve only been in the city for a short while, so I don’t have many connections.”

“So you didn’t grow up around here? That’s surprising, considering how the other beastkin treat you.”

“It’s not hard to gain their trust when so few are willing to lend a hand.”

“You’ve got a point, I guess. Even we were starting to get some acceptance in just a single afternoon. But you are a gladiator, aren’t you?”

“…Yes.”

“I won’t ask why, but at the very least, can you introduce me to the one in charge of setting up your matches? Preferably as a new gladiator looking to make a name for himself.”

Rin stands from her chair and walks to a nearby cabinet. After pulling the crooked door open, she retrieves a small bucket. Without a word, she heads toward the house’s only door.
